Ontario: QVC to build distribution center
    July 14, 2015

Television retailer QVC will build its first West Coast distribution center in Ontario, the city and the West Chester, Pa. company announced Tuesday.

The approximately 1million-square-foot facility is projected for completion in summer 2016, with 500 hires anticipated by 2018 and approximately 1,000 employees forecast when the center expands to full operations by 2020.

Cost of the project was not disclosed. QVC said the facility will be designed to handle about 20 percent of its total U.S. business. It will eventually store and ship all product categories.

The lease agreement signed with property owner Sares-Regis calls for development of the building in Ontario at Fourth Street and Vineyard Avenue, just north of the 10 freeway, Ontario officials said.

Ontario offers “unique opportunities for businesses to come here and untilize our interstate highways, our rail systems, and our international airport,” Ontario City Council member Alan D. Wapner said in a statement. “For a company like QVC – which has shipped more than 1.7 billion packages in the U.S. over the past 28 years – this competitive advantage is paramount.”

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified building will feature a 250-killowatt solar array on its rooftop, and use high-efficiency systems for lighting and environmental controls, Ontario officials said.

The facility’s location will also lower QVC’s use of trucking by more than 10 million miles annually, leading to a reduction of more than 35 million pounds of CO2 emissions per year, the company said.
